The minutes after a collision can feel confusing. A simple order of operations helps protect drivers, passengers, responders, and the damaged vehicle while towing arrangements are made.

Handle immediate safety first

Check for injuries and call 911 when anyone may be hurt, traffic is blocked, fluids are leaking, or the crash creates an immediate danger. Follow police or emergency instructions. If the vehicle can be moved safely and authorities direct you to do so, move away from active travel lanes and switch on the hazard lights.

The New Jersey Driver Manual advises drivers of disabled vehicles to pull off as far as possible, use emergency flashers, remain belted in the vehicle when appropriate, and call for help.

Document the scene without creating another hazard

Tell the towing company what is damaged

Let dispatch know whether wheels are locked, airbags deployed, steering is damaged, the vehicle is electric, or the car left the roadway. These details help the operator bring suitable equipment and plan a controlled recovery.

Know where the vehicle is going

Confirm the destination with the driver before transport. Depending on the situation, the vehicle may go to a repair facility, collision center, storage location, dealership, or another address chosen by the owner or insurer.
