Flatbed and wheel-lift trucks are both useful, but they solve different towing problems. The right choice depends on vehicle design, condition, weight, clearance, and the space available at the pickup location.
How flatbed towing works
A flatbed carries the vehicle with all four wheels off the road. It is often preferred for all-wheel-drive vehicles, electric vehicles, low-clearance cars, collision-damaged vehicles, long-distance transport, and situations where a wheel or axle may not roll normally.
How wheel-lift towing works
A wheel-lift supports one end of the vehicle while the other wheels remain on the road. It can be extremely useful in tight parking areas, narrow streets, and controlled short-distance moves. Dollies may be used when the remaining wheels should not roll.
What determines the correct method?
- Drive configuration and manufacturer guidance
- Locked, missing, or damaged wheels
- Ground clearance and body modifications
- Vehicle weight and dimensions
- Garage height, traffic, and available loading space
- Distance and final destination
The newest-looking truck is not automatically the right truck. Safe towing starts with accurate information and equipment rated for the job.
