A disabled motorcycle needs more than an open truck bed and a few straps. Its narrow contact points, exposed components, low clearance, and balance requirements make proper loading and securement especially important.
Why motorcycle transport is different
A motorcycle cannot be secured exactly like a passenger car. The operator must consider the bike’s weight, fairings, handlebars, exhaust, suspension travel, and safe attachment points. Poor strap placement can damage painted surfaces, compress the suspension excessively, or allow the bike to shift.
Information to provide when requesting service
- Motorcycle make and model
- Approximate weight
- Whether it rolls and steers
- Whether a wheel or the forks are damaged
- Pickup conditions, including garages, gravel, slopes, or limited access
If the motorcycle was involved in a crash, mention loose parts and fluid leaks. If the key is unavailable or the steering is locked, tell dispatch before the truck arrives.
Controlled loading and securement
The towing operator should use equipment appropriate for the bike and the pickup location. Loading is performed slowly while protecting low bodywork and maintaining balance. Multiple securement points help control forward, rearward, and side-to-side movement during transport.
Before the motorcycle leaves
Remove detachable luggage and personal items when possible. Photograph the motorcycle and confirm its destination. Do not attempt to ride a bike with uncertain steering, braking, wheel, or tire damage.
