A breakdown is stressful, but the safest next step depends on where the vehicle stops. A quiet parking lot and a narrow highway shoulder require very different precautions.
Move away from traffic when the vehicle can still move
Signal, reduce speed gradually, and pull as far from active lanes as conditions allow. Turn on the hazard lights. If the vehicle is in immediate danger, traffic is blocked, or anyone is injured, call 911.
Choose the safest place to wait
On a busy highway, remaining belted inside the vehicle may be safer than standing beside traffic. If the vehicle is smoking, on fire, or in another hazardous position, move to a protected area away from the roadway when it is safe to do so. Follow instructions from police and emergency personnel.
The New Jersey Driver Manual advises motorists with disabled vehicles to pull off as far as possible, use emergency flashers, stay belted in the vehicle when appropriate, lock the doors, and call for help.
Help the operator find you
- Share the road name, direction of travel, and nearest exit or intersection.
- Use the site’s Send Your Location tool when an address is unclear.
- Describe the vehicle and its position.
- Mention locked wheels, collision damage, low clearance, or a missing key.
Give tow operators room
New Jersey’s Move Over guidance reminds approaching drivers to move over or slow down for tow trucks and disabled vehicles displaying warning lights.
