Check the vehicle before leaving
- Tire pressure, tread, and spare-tire condition
- Engine oil, coolant, and windshield-washer fluid
- Battery condition and secure connections
- Belts and hoses for cracks, bulges, or leaks

Build a practical emergency kit
Carry a charged phone and charger, drinking water, first-aid supplies, flashlight, reflective warning equipment, tire gauge, jumper cables, gloves, essential medications, and weather-appropriate clothing. Check the kit before every long trip.
Know what to do during a breakdown
Reduce speed smoothly and move away from traffic if the vehicle can be driven safely. Use hazard lights and call 911 for immediate danger, injuries, fire, or a vehicle blocking traffic. Avoid attempting roadside repairs next to fast-moving vehicles.
Provide a precise location

Describe the problem clearly
